Yes funny that..not !
Your observation applies to Scotland's industrial belt that goes from Cumbernauld in the west, to Kircaldy & Glenrothes in the east where the poorer and mainly catholic citizens are crammed into "schemes"...blocks and blocks of high rise flats with no facilities and cheap shopping centres selling rubbish...successive governments moved the people out of the streets they used to live in and herded them towards a more "modern future", thereby freeing up the affluent city centres for the arts and crafts and banking systems that took over the historic or "posh" areas...these "schemes" are now rife with crime, drug lords, cheap tat shops and "take aways"....the community spirit went down the pan.
You think Edinburgh is beautiful, go look at Sighthill and Wester Hailes for example...the kids there don't have a future and no government cares about the slums, the dirt and despair..
Things are just as bad (but for an entirely different reason) in the Borders, Fife, Galloway and the Highlands and Islands where the English have moved in to buy up the quaint sea side cottages and farm building either as " second homes" or to install their families in to take advantage of the higher class of education our system seems to have. If it weren't for successive English governments and a long line of English realtors things would be hunky fuckin'dory north of the border, but unfortunately young people are forced to rent accomodation or to move to fairer climes...There was no way, back in the '80's, that we could ever have afforded to pay the inflated prices for a cottage because of the hiked " English prices" that the sassenachs were prepared to pay.
Obviously a generalisation, but condensed for your benefit Roscoe.
