Thank you, that is indeed beautiful. Can I lower the tone a bit with a much favoured Christmas song:

And to go with it a much favoured Christmas film, re-watched for the umpteenth time last night:

And obviously wish everyone a very enjoyable Christmas. :D

St. Nicolas from French Flandersand is patron of Lorraine. A little donkey carries baskets filled with children's gifts, biscuits and sweets. The most popular of his legends is of three children who wandered away and got lost. Cold and hungry, a wicked butcher lured them into his shop where he attacked and salted them away in a large tub. Through the intervention of St. Nicolas the boys were restored to their families. This story led to Nicolas being recognized as the protector of children. In France statues and paintings often portray this event, showing the saint with children in a barrel. The evil butcher became Père Fouettard, who has followed St Nicolas in shame ever since. This story is also a popular French children's song. Meanwhile bakeries and home kitchens are a hive of activity making spiced gingerbread biscuits.

Three small children were gleaning in the fields. As they worked and played, they wandered off into the town. Walking about and exploring, the children forgot the time.

When it was late and the sun going down, the children were hungry, tired and lost. They came to a lighted butcher's shop, knocked and said, "We are lost and hungry. May we eat and sleep?" "Oh, yes," came the reply, "do come in."

As they enter, the butcher takes a sharp knife, cuts them up, and puts them in a large salting tub. Seven years pass.

A knock comes on the door. Bishop Saint Nicholas appears, saying to the evil butcher, "Open your large salting tub!" The saint puts his hand on the tub and, appealing to God, says, "Rise up, children." The little children awake and stand up. Their families joyfully welcome them home.

Ever since St. Nicholas has been the patron and protector of children.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: The older, original version of this story is about three students traveling away to school. They stopped in an inn and were drugged, robbed, and murdered. Over the years, especially in France and Western Europe, these grown male students came to be seen as little children. Sometimes it is an evil innkeeper, other times an evil butcher that does them in. In France the evil butcher became St. Nicholas servant and has followed him ever since. This is the most popular story in France, set to a well-known and beloved song. The image of Saint Nicholas with children in a tub at his feet is the most widespread image of the saint in Western Europe.

In France Père Noël is traditionally accompanied by an assistant named Père Fouettard. Père Fouettard has been accompanying Père Noël since at least the Middle Ages, making him a part of a long tradition associated with the season.

Fouettard has a dark, ruffian like appearance and in the past his task was to punish the children who had been bad while St. Nicholas / Père Noël rewarded the good children with gifts.

In the past, children were told that Fouettard would punish children who had been bad with a spanking while Père Noël would reward those who had been good with candy or other small gift. Like Père Noël / St. Nicholas, Fouettard has evolved with the times and in our present, kinder and gentler era, his role as the spanker of naughty children is downplayed or not mentioned at all.

Père Fouettard's connection to St. Nicholas dates back to the fourth century and his story actually represents both the existence of evil in the world and God's infinite mercy. According to legend, Fouettard is the butcher in the legend of St. Nicholas and the three boys.

Image

Among the many loving miracles attributed to St. Nicholas is the story of his bringing back to life three young boys who had been murdered by a wicked butcher.

One version of the story tells of a famine in the land and three young boys who become lost while out searching the fields for food missed by the harvest. In other versions the boys simply become lost while wandering in the fields. As night begins to descend they spy a butcher's shop and knock on the door seeking shelter for the night. The butcher opens the door and invites them in.

But, instead of giving them food and shelter for the night, the butcher kills the boys and then hacks their bodies to pieces and throws the pieces into a barrel of brine (salt water) along with a butchered pig that he is preserving in the brine. His intention, of course, is to increase his profit by including the boys' remains as part of the pork he is selling.

Some time later there is another knock at the door and when the butcher opens the door he sees St. Nicholas standing in the doorway.

Since the butcher's encounter with St. Nicholas occurred after the death of the saint, the butcher instantly knows that St. Nicholas has come for the murdered boys. Stepping past the butcher,

St. Nicholas makes his way to the barrel and tells the three boys to arise and come to him. All three are immediately made whole and come to life. Stepping out of the barrel, the boys spoke of being asleep and dreaming of Heaven.

Watching from his position by the doorway, the butcher suddenly became remorseful and repentant for what he had done. St. Nicholas assured him that God forgave all sinners who repented regardless of the sin.

Feeling both ashamed for what he had done and gratitude toward St. Nicholas for undoing the damage resulting from his crime, the butcher chose to follow St. Nicholas from the shop and has been at the saint's side through the ages, not as the slave or servant of the saint but as a loyal follower showing his gratitude by helping where he can.

At least that is the story, or a variation of the story, that has been told in France and the surrounding areas for centuries about how Père Fouettard came to accompany St. Nicholas.

hehehe....that's funny.

The Devil Wears Prada.....

Seriously though, is that a book? It doesn't look like one. So, what is it? And what has it got to do with Christmas?

Thank you Sheila for sharing the story of Bishop Saint Nicholas. I did not know it. It reminds me of Hansel and Gretel though.

Christmas is sooooo.....disgusting, here in the states. I've got to come up with something that has some real meaning for me, I just haven't come up with anything yet. I know, it's suppose to be about family and all, but.....what happens when you find you really don't like your family all that much?

Like Andrew, I think I may celebrate Mithras. Man, won't that piss off my mom (methodist preacher) oohhh...that's an added bonus!

Yes, that's a book - it's the four canonical Gospels. Nice cover, but I'm sure it's not designed for reading in bed.

Pilrig,

I thought you might appreciate this picture of typical Santa Cruzans enjoying the annual, illegal DIY Last Night Parade:

It's a bit of a running joke that this is an "illegal" parade, but the local powers that be keep the joke going themselves by wringing their hands about it publicly each year like clockwork. Until 6 years ago, we had a very nice city sanctioned First Night event that involved a parade, art, music, etc. - then the well ran dry and ever since we have had the unsanctioned DIY Last Night Parade, which is (not) organized by the local anarchist (not) group, sans permits - the authorities forever tarred themselves the first year by secretly infiltrating the planning sessions and then prosecuting and fining some selected leaders - since then, the population has made it abundantly clear that we are fully supportive of the event and you couldn't find a planner of it if your life depended on it! What makes it so silly, is that this VERY fun parade only lasts about 45 minutes, is VERY children oriented and has absolutely no negative impact on anything, as the High Street is already closed and staffed by hundreds of police, in anticipation of the 20,000 drunken visitors who POUR into Santa Cruz for a long evening of debauchery!
