The Bee is dying and we are only now beginning to wake up and recognise its huge significance, not only to the global economy but to our very survival. However the importance of this sacred creature was not lost on ancient man, in fact, from prehistory to Egyptian times, it appears to have been viewed as the single most cherished god on the planet.

Andrew before you suicide over a paucity of response to your article allow me to congratulate you on a well researched article with few "long bows".
Excavations at Tel Rehov in the Jordan valley have recently uncovered an apiary, with isotopic c14 dating the honeycomb and bee remains to the 10-9th centuries BC, this could well therefore include the Israel ruled by David/Solomon. The "Land of milk and honey" could thus represent bees' honey, it previously being thought to refer to the "honey" derived from dates and figs. Look forward to the next installment.

Thanks for the reply! ya, so the discussion about the Bee on this forum has been quite quiet. But that's ok. While I think it’s a very fresh and exciting subject - as hopefully Parts 2 and 3 (which are fall less speculative) will illustrate.

Your insight is very interesting in deed. I cover the Bee and Religion in some detail in Part II, including things like The Bee in Hebrew meaning ‘DBRE’, meaning Deborah, and Judges 5 contains one of the oldest passages in the Bible, and some feel, the earliest example of Hebrew poetry; the 8th century Song of Deborah, or as it is commonly known, the Song of The Bees. And loads, loads more. So much material…

I went to Girona to study RLC with a Cabalist and I came away with dozens of pages of notes on the Bee!

Parts 2 and 3 are done, but I am sprucing them up a bit and giving people time to read the first one.

Cheers Roger. I cover the confusion between Bees and Flies and what that has led to in some instances in Part 2 - but far more exciting things as well; )

I am not bothered by the lack of debate. I've only just begun and the story has yet to be told, really.

The honey of bees explicitly is mentioned only twice in the bible, the rest being the "Land of milk and honey" type. See Judges14:8-9 and Samuel I 14:27.

It's interesting is it not? I think we all are of similar ilk......we read, we analyse, we say, hey!! these guys were pretty good for what they had and knew. Imagine the historians of olde (deliberate sp mistake) with our resources.....if only........

Hi Shelia. Thanks for the participation on the Bee thread; )

So, when Part III is out, I will list my references and suggested reading for further Bee research. And the website you listed is one of like 10 that I will reference. The site is really sweet, and you will see many, many of those images in Part II. I am currently in dialogue with Maka, who runs the site. Lovely lady. She is looking for a producer for her Bee documentry - a small portion of which you can see on her website.

Maka sent me an email after Part 1 that said 'Wow! Somewhere a Bee Goddess is smiling', which I thought was really nice.

And the reaction has been postive from a couple of Beekeeper groups so we shall see. Part III includes RLC and the Grail so they may all turn on me then

So Part II would be out now - its done, but Ingrid the German Cabalist in Spain has asked me to wait so she can transcribe bits from a 1940's German only book that has some great stuff on a certain aspect of the Bee that I have touched on, but not featured that deeply. And like the references, Ingrid will be acknowledged and a picture of her provided in Part III.

Ok, so I am regretting posting this thread now. You guys are to good and are going to uncover it all before it comes out. Enough peaking!

The Cathars regarded Cistercian Monks like Bee workers in a hive.

The Cathars therefore nicknamed Cistercians - Bees.

They spoke of Arnaud Amaury, a Cistercian monk who tried to convert them,

"Ara roda l'abelha" - "That bee is buzzing around again".

According to Voltaire they humiliated him. He said:

"L'abbé de Cîteaux paraissait avec l'équipage d'un prince. Il voulut en vain parler en apôtre; le peuple lui criait: Quittez le luxe ou le sermon" -

"The Abbot of Cîteaux appeared, with the entourage of a prince. In vain he spoke as an Apostle; the people shouted back at him “Abandon either your luxury or your preaching”.

Arnaud later became Archbishop of Narbonne.

Arnaud is best remembered for his instruction before the massacre at Béziers.

In Latin "Cædite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius";

in French "Tuez-les tous, Dieu reconnaîtra les siens";

in English "Kill them all. God will know his own".

Interestingly there is NOTHING to commemorate the massacre of probably 12000 people anywhere in the town of Beziers. Most of the people weren't Cathars.

No doubt the church would still like to brush this incident from their bloody history under the table.

The Cathedral in Beziers is stunning.

With regard to Jake's beehive huts they are all over the ring of Kerry (the largest concentration of stone cirlces and dolmans in the world) and also they are on the Dingle peninsula. They are of course to the immediate north of Rennes le Chateau at the Great Camp near Coustaussa.

However the most interesting place you will find these huts is on the island of Skellig Michael.

The huts in Ireland are called Cathairs.

There was a particularly interesting pagan festival I witnessed in Co Kerry whilst there in 2006.
