Step mother is fine. Hopefully will here from bro soon.

Weird. VA is not some place that has earthquakes.

This is the first one I remember feeling anyway. The dishes in my cabinets shook for over 30 seconds.

Yep, that's the one. I thought my chimney was going to fall!

I have family members less than 35 miles from the center.....they are fine though. Will know more later; step-bro is a fireman.

Glad you are all ok Serendipity........last I heard from you, you were still weeding the gardens and getting the fish pond in order. I have harvested all the veggies from my gardens except for pumpkins and watermelons and my flower gardens are just wilting in this heat. Pool temperature is 90degrees. Good day to take a boat ride......in my Retro Ranger 335v..........great old glitter boat while listening to "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck.............just can't drop the top at Chesapeake Bay

I keep feeling dizzy. I got really dizzy just before the earth started quaking....at first, I thought if was me.

Even the school system sent out a call saying that all buildings would be inspected this evening.

This is sooooo strange. I hope the aftershocks are mild.

Oh, scorpieauxgirl.....the damn groundhogs got our entire garden except the squash....which dried up over a week ago. I'm hoping we get some rain from the hurricane (and that it puts out the fire in the dismall swamp). The lawn is crunchy.....

I was actually on the phone with a customer in Falls Church when it happened. He lay the phone down and never came back!

We have massive amounts of gophers in Santa Cruz and most folks grow at least some veggies because of the year round climate - pretty much everyone lines their beds with gopher wire and black plastic, which mostly works. We also have to have 8 foot fences to stop the deer.

We put out deer corn on a wooden slab just next to the corn field so they don't bother ours, but if the deer corn ran out, they ate tomatoes, squash and peppers. We see more deer in our backyard than at that expensive hunting club the hubs and kids belong to. More turkeys too. We had a small quake in Alabama a while back........I thought the kids were fighting or something the way the walls shook. Glad you're ok!

I bet your Moms garden was better than both ours together!!!!

OMG! The monument is tilting....

http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2011/aug/23/picket-fnc-reports-washington-monument-may-be-tilt/

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in Richmond, Virginia and felt as far as New York City and New England.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly reported at 2:30 pm that their bureau received information from a producer saying that a Captiol Hill Police officer says that the Washington Monument may actually be tilting as a result of the earthquake.

Seismologist John Rundle joined Kelly on her show and confirmed that the Washington Monument could very well be tilting as a result of the earthquake and the structure should be checked out.

Two nuclear reactors have reportedly been taken off line near the epicenter of the earthquake.

According to the AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) — A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile deep.

Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

It was centered near Louisa, Va., which is northwest of Richmond and south of Washington.

Obama and many of the nation's leaders were out of town on August vacation when the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. EDT. The shaking was felt on the Martha's Vineyard golf course as Obama was just starting a round.

The East Coast gets earthquakes, but usually smaller ones and is less prepared than California or Alaska for shaking. At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking.

Everything is fine.

"Shaken but not stirred" is the headline of the local paper.

The worst damage seems to have happened to the Washington Monument which is closed indefinately. Something about a crack near the top....but it sure looks like it's leaning to me.

It would seem though, that someone/something is targeting nuclear power plants with 'natural' dissasters world wide.....or do we have so many now that a nuclear plant would be in danger no matter where a dissaster takes place?

have you listened to a Finnish scientists theory on the

its shows that nuclear reactors all over the world are shutting down

http://youtu.be/JAUY-Y3Kiek

its a fascinating theory

Man....is any of that possible?

Interesting about Russia and uranium.....guess what is an active topic, right now, in Virginia?

Uranium mining....

http://hamptonroads.com/2011/08/uraniummining-company-disputes-va-beach-study

Quote:
Virginia Uranium Inc. representatives could have picked a better day to refute a Virginia Beach study on the potential dangers of a mining operation in south-central Virginia during a natural disaster.

But there they were in front of City Council three hours after a rare earthquake and with Beach officials preparing for a possible hurricane this weekend.

Alan Kuhn, a consultant for Virginia Uranium, which wants the state to lift its ban on uranium mining so the company can extract the deposits in Pittsylvania County, called the Beach's study flawed and "based on unrealistic assumptions."

Yes it is very interesting

we are having nuclear plants shutting down and Europe is shutting some of theirs down too

Scary stuff when ever you deal with Plutonium
Isn't that the legend of Atlantis
a people who at the height of technology destroyed themselves with power to powerful for even them

This can't be good....

http://enformable.com/2011/08/breaking-news-north-anna-to-go-into-cold-shutdown-so-possible-containment-building-damage-can-be-inspected/

Quote:
Jim Norvelle, spokesman for plant operator Dominion Virginia Power, said Wednesday that the plant “will be shut down until it is safe to restart,” though he could not say when exactly that would be.

Coincidentally, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission had scheduled for Wednesday the announcement of a new senior resident inspector for the North Anna plant. At least two resident inspectors are assigned to every U.S. nuclear plant, according to the NRC. Despite the timing of that release, the new inspector had been on site at North Anna for several weeks, and the announcement was unrelated to the earthquake, Ledford said.

Combine that with the initial reports that the earthquake caused some of the asbestos insulation around the some of the piping to come loose is significant because that insulation isn’t just sort of lying around on top of the pipes, it is seriously glued into place. So for some of it to come loose means there was a whole lot of shaking going on.

So, a whole lot of shaking going on, combined with only one coolant pump per unit running (after a 24-hour [or more] down period), combined with going into cold shutdown. Add it up, folks. The damage at North Anna may have been quite serious.

I would bet that the plant will be cold for quite some time
its location to Washington and the Pentagon is a factor to be taken

Two things that have struck me in seeing coverage of the power plant are: 1) that the North Anna plant was repeatedly described as "less than 20 miles" or "less than 15 miles" from the epicenter. While those statements are technically accurate, it would seem more accurate to say "is 6 miles from the epicenter". 2) It was not broadly mentioned that the earthquake rating of the plant is only 5.9-6.1 (apparently the range is dependent on whether a given building has rock, or soil beneath it) - while I realize there is a large difference between a 5.8 and a 5.9, I think it should have been more widely publicized how close the quake was to tolerance levels (even if they are conservatively stated).

Caelum your right on
They are looking over the plant ...and it has damage

the plant was extremely close to the epicenter of the earthquake

I have a feeling more and more nuclear plants will be shut down

Now I have seen an article saying the Chinese nuclear plants were made on the cheap
not a good situation there either

Earthquake Swarm Continues On El Hierro, Canary Islands.

Quote:
magma is now on the move upwards while the depth of earthquakes has become increasingly shallow in recent days with most being recorded at a depth of 10 to 14 kilometres. Movement of magma towards the surface signifies that a volcanic eruption is likely to happen, but the timing of such remains unclear.

Interesting topic

During my walk, I found a path of information, that lead me to believe the following is true.

There's a place- Inside, the information shows how things must be altered to continue to reach further inside this place.
While acquiring this information- I came to begin to understand this- That by going to this place, events will happen while there, that will cause the Plates to shift below this location/place, that will further cause a ripple effect of earthquakes.

Here's a sign to let you know you did it- When your inside this location and you cause the water to change/move- you've started the process for the plates to shift.

October 11, 2011 – CANARY ISLANDS – El Hierro. Google MapsSpain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) confirmed on Tuesday that an underwater eruption has occurred five kilomtres off the southern coastline of El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Island. The eruption is Spain’s first since the eruption in 1971 of the Teneguía volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). The IGN says all three of its seismic stations on El Hierro in the Canary Islands have registered a volcanic tremor of low frequency in the south of the island at La Restinga, the southern-most village in the Canaries. Residents of the town were summoned to a local football field on Tuesday afternoon to be briefed on provisional evacuation procedures in the event of another eruption closer to the shore. The estimated 537 residents are expected to be evacuated. A Red Alert has been issued for the town. Scientists from IGN and CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), meanwhile, have conducted a reconnaissance flight over the sea to the area south of the island, where they have located dead fish floating on the surface five kilometers from the coast. The dead fish were identified in an area where lower seismic magnitude occurred on October 9, at a depth of approximately 2 km. The present volcanic activity is understood to be occurring at a depth of 600 meters (just under one kilometer) below sea level, in the Las Calmas Sea. Scientists from IGN, CSIC and the University of Cadiz have established their monitoring base at La Restinga. Efforts are underway to determine if the subsea volcanic vent is widening and if so, in which direction (away or toward El Hierro). Initial reports of the eruption were received from crews on board four separate ships. Local media agency Canarias7 reported on Monday that Government authorities have suspended ferry activities to and from the 285 square-kilometer island. English language newspaper islandconnections.eu reported: “The maritime chief for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Antonio Padrón has issued a recommendation that boats should not sail closer than four miles off El Hierro. Divers have also been told to suspend all activities.”
