The Eagle opens (at least in the US) tomorrow and apparently involves a Roman soldier
going over the (Hadrian's) wall, into the wilds of Caledonia, to retrieve the Ninth Legion's
Eagle standard, which has been reported to be in a pagan temple.

That seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to get your hands on something that you're
just going to stick on a pole!

So, the Romans built hadrians wall because the picts were using sticks and bone knives to kick their ass....yep, that's believable.....yeah, I know; it's just a movie.

Well...I'm hoping you didn't steal it...and just live that close.

Take care of your portion of history, a great deal of it is being destroyed and sold. (what has happened to Nineveh is so sad...)

Now about the Romans....it is certainly hard to tell just who the Romans met in battle in the area. There is evidence of ancient Amazons (Island of Women, next to the Isle of Iona), Vikings in Orkney, Picts and Irish....and let's not forget the people who claim to come from Greater Scythia....all of these people were fighting the Romans there....even the Romans document having fought tribes from the Highlands....(Rannoch is not that close to the wall).

I've hiked that section in Northumberland National Park - absolutely stunning scenery, both natural and man made - loved it!!

och....depends on whether it was reputed to spit flames, thirst for blood, call down the fire from heaven - call up the angelic hordes and/or generally devastate the opposing team by filling them with unknown terror....!

love the token red-heads btw :D

Well...yes...that WOULD be worth it then...

I loved the red heads as well!

It's a movie not a series Nic, it stars Tatum Channing and the kid all grown up that played Billy Elliot.

Thanks Rain, not sure why I thought that. Maybe the still posted had a TV look about it
I suppose this could be a positive as recreating that era needs a bit of money for the production. The last film I remember about the Roman Ninth Legion was the 2007 movie "The Last Legion"

That's okay, I went and accidently saw a Hong Kong film the other day and it took 15 minutes to work out it wasn't ads. Luckly it was subtitled and one of the best 2D films I'd seen in ages.

Nic - no embarrassment necessary! I will report back on the film - frankly I can't resist "sword and sandal" movies. There actually has been a more recent 9th Legion movie and I quite enjoyed it, even though it was fairly gruesome violencewise:

and I'm a big fan of:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020558/

just in case you haven't seen it...

Hi Caelum, me too with the "sword and sandal" movies :D
I forgot about Centurion, liked that one as well. Out of interest what is the other film you like ( the links are the same ) ? Let me guess, King Arthur ( if I remember, he was depicted as a Roman soldier at Hadrian's wall ) ?

A very quick review of The Eagle IMHO.
Decent music, ok plot, good acting on the whole, better first half than second, not exactly historically enlightening. :|

Thank you Nic....I was going to see it (last) Friday but didn't get my chores done in time. I was really wanting something that was historically enlightening...so I don't know that I will see it at the theartres...will probably wait and rent it.

No problem Serendipity, however don't let me put you off the film. I did enjoy it, just more for its action than its educational value. If you want to watch a film with Romans in and have a bit of a history lesson as well, I would recommend Imperium: Augustus (2003) :- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340529/
I can't vouch for its total accuracy but the basic premise seems to be authentic to the history of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus ( Octavius ). Nowhere near as easy to watch as The Eagle but enjoyable non-the-less.
Regards
Nic
