With the reappearance of Roscoe, its time to remove myself from this forum.

This forum has become pretty dire of late anyway, I doubt things will improve. Keep in touch.

not very good with the french Tertius, but wouldn't eliminating the comma after "detruit" make more sense?

There wasn't much to destroy anyway ... only illusions.

Emanating from the mouth (or rather keyboard) of the perpetrator of a hoax, that's rich coming from you.

:? Surely, substituting it for a full stop or a semi-colon would make more sense. They're two different clauses.

That said, Bill, French grammar and nuance - probably not a hugely promising forum niche for either you or I to try and occupy.

Anyway, the meaning is clear. But I'm sure the forum will survive and grumble onwards. January and February are often particularly irritable months. I remember the winter of '08/'09, which led to the appointment of the Moderator. For example.

Plus, with all due respect to Spartacus' rather portentous farewell to the troops, if I had a tenner for every time someone announced that they were leaving the forum, and another tenner for every time someone's told me that in a private message, and another one for every time I've said it to myself, I'd be quite wealthy. Just the way it goes; all part of the ebb and flow. Drift in, drift out, things usually settle down, and there's always plenty of other things to be doing in the interim, anyway. :)

People who announce they are going rarely do

Still.....it's rather sad. When I first joined, the forum was very active. On any given day there were at least 10 active threads. We are lucky to have 4 now.

The list of banned posters is not that long. So, where did everyone go?

And why did they leave?

It's not logical to blame it all on roscoe.

Wonder who we could find to actually pay us? I'd be rich! Rich!

Certainly not Dippity, if anything Roscoe is a catalyst!

Too many recurring hoaxes and spammers, not enough on-topic material to dissect. That, and most of the real movers and shakers from a decade ago have simply lost interest. Fads come, fads go, and a new generation comes up to re-hash old material as though they'd discovered something new and unexamined. It gets old after awhile.

Indeed, the material has been stretched way, way too thin by the ignorant, the dreamers, the schemers and the down right mendacious.
Roscoe isn't even a catalyst, he's merely a symptom of a diseased condition, rather like a carbuncle.
RLC is an item of minor historic interest which has proved to be the rocks on which many a reputation foundered.

Hey ho!

The problem is, new members are afraid to post as one new member recently said.
There is often a new name/ member along the bottom but they never get passed that first stage of induction.
Most folk can't be bothered with all the argy bargy that has become the norm now.

I've seen at least two generations come and go - the original HBHG/Picknett & Prince crowd, and the Da Vinci Code crowd. The latter was just another re-hash of the former that had gone stale with age. And now, in the zeal to create new angles, the hoaxsters are at play but there's still just enough of the old guard around to see right through it. Historically this is the point where the old die-hards either hive off or find new hobbies. History repeats itself.

I would disagree, new members seem to be very bold in their assertions but often retreat to nurse their wounds when it's clear they haven't delighted the forum with their "originality". Others who have been at it awhile keep plugging away, but the tangible result is only annoyance. Most here are no fools, and that can be discouraging when someone new is looking to make a splash.
