Following on from the posts in the "Que Poussin Teniers gardent la clef" topic, I thought I'd start this here as it isn't directly related to RLC.
This program is a BBC docu about Delphi, it's oracle and the history surrounding it. Well worth a watch if you have time. One interesting link that I picked up was the location of the Oracle's temple. It is at the bottom of a mountain that contains a cave which the locals used to venerate their gods. This has striking similarities to the Great Antrum at Baia with its Temple of Apollo higher up on its peak.
The common consensus seems to be that the gas inhaled by the Oracle at Delphi was Ethylene causing hallucinations from a fault line running through the temple.

I think you might mean the Oracle at Cuma, which has the Temple of Apollo on its peak, rather than the Oracle of the Dead, aka the Great Antrum at Baia.

I did indeed mean the Oracle at Cuma, cheers for pointing that out. Feel free to expand this topic across to the other Oracles, as there are obvious connections. Nice link Sheila, thanks :D .

Nic

i assume the entrances were hidden by the Romans to ensure that no-one would be able to use the underground network for its oracular purposes of contacting the dead....so they left the temples alone but closed off the subterranean parts.

i wonder who was in this "tomb"...who was their "divine ancestor"...?

Quote:
Like Sheila, they quite sensibly suggested that there might be a back entrance.

No, one entrance and two exits...remember Aeneas and the two doors.
