Hunt for the Holy Grail ends in Irvine and Kilwinning?
Irvine Times [UK], 24th July, 2009

KILWINNING or Irvine could soon be beseiged by treasure hunters
looking for the fabled Holy Grail, after historical revealations made
by a local expert. Archivist AJ Morton, known in the town for his
Times Secret History column, stunned the archaeological community by
declaring that Kilwinning should not have been over-looked in the
search for treasure relating to the Knights Templar. He explained
that the massive number of properties in the area once owned by the
group who were reported to possess the chalice said to have been used
by Jesus during the Last Supper - a story brought back to the public
attention through the smashhit novel and film The DaVinci Code.

There never was anything of any importance in Scotland to the Templars.

Sad, but true.

These money-hoarding nyaffs weren't of much importance to us. In fact the Hospitallers left a more substantial if less exotic legacy here.

The Templar connection with Kilwinning is a myth started by Chevalier Ramsay, and repeated down through the ages. But there IS a sort of connection (according to Robert L.D. Cooper's book The Rosslyn Hoax ? ) that Lodge Mother Kilwinning granted a charter to an Irish lodge with the title "The High Knights Templar of Ireland Kilwinning Lodge". And that's about that re the Templar connection with Kilwinning.

BUT, since another thread is mentioneing the geometry of the RLC landscape, you might be interested to know there is a rather curious wood a mile and a half east of Kilwinning called Benslie. There have been claims for this wood connecting it with the Templars and Freemasons (this being Kilwinning after all !) and it has been suggested that the wood and the estate resemble a Celtic cross. A few years ago I found a web page showing the resemblance twixt Benslie and the Celtic cross and a presumed connection with Heredom but damned if I can find the print-out !

Anyway here's a multimap link to Benslie http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=kilwin ... 2,-4.64091 its just an 18th century Dutch garden.

More about the Benslie connection http://www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk/posti ... iewood.htm

http://www.geocities.com/symbolos/hrdm.htm (in Spanish)

And most fascinating of the lot http://geo.nls.uk/roy/ from General Roy's military map of Scotland draughted between 1747 & 1755. Select on 'Ayr' for the county and 'Kilwinning' for the parish - this shows the Eglinton estate (now Eglinton Country Park) just to the east of modern-day Kilwinning. And if you look at the Roy map, to the right of the Eglinton estate is 'Bensley' and there is what looks like cross enclosed in a circle.

However according to the bottom poster on this site http://www.s1kilwinning.com/news/have-y ... nning.html

Oops ! it's the poster on the final link on the above post who claims it's just a Dutch garden.

You know Pilrig, that's a good question. 'Cause Robert de Ros is buried in Templar Church and he certainly was married with issue. Come to think of it....lots of Templar Knights had families.

maybe the vow of celibacy was a joke....like the vow the cathlic priests take...just a joke.

Personally, I don't know of ANY man who goes without sex. Why would they come up with a vow like that?

You mean TEMPLE church ? London or Midlothian ?

Come think of it, it may have been a vow of chastity, which aint the same thing as celibacy.
When it comes to such vows I've always thought the Mormons have a tough time. I mean, I could exist in Saudi Arabia (nae bevvy), I don't smoke and I only really swear when at work...but to do without coffee ? No chance !
