It's excellent. I've only been through them superficially but it really does paint a picture.

i think it all helps to build a completely different picture once you start to really delve into the names and dates and you get a better idea of how these people lived on a daily basis in a small community. I keep coming accross things that make me chuckle, such as he asked his tailor to make him a cosy coat .....bless.

Woah there, hold the horses, Google translate does not work...all it does is cause confusion and what it has given you is all wrong.

if you look over the original French of what you have just printed out, you will find out that Auguste Dénarnaud is a person and so is Augustin Dénarnaud....they didn't give anyone any money, Saunière gave it to them.

no the right hand collumn is his spending/debits....thats where i am getting it from :D
such as.....Donné à Auguste DENARNAUD
the left hand collumn is the money he recieved.

although "Donné à Auguste DENARNAUD" translates at Given to Auguste Denarnaud not Auguste gave Denarnaud

how would you translate it Sheila?
if it means given to Auguste Denarnaud perhaps he was a co partner in the blacksmith buisness but then we also have Donné à DENARNAUD Marie!

also, Bling and Google translate give different translations sometimes such as they translate the words but not in context or sentences unless you are translating a document automatically.

I think you are getting confused, i know how to read the carnets, here's what you posted, compared to what is actually written.

In May/June 1906 he Marie gave Denarnaud 400f...................Donné à DENARNAUD Marie 400,00
In July/August 1906 Augustus gave Denarnaud 400f................Donné à Auguste DENARNAUD 400,00
In September/October 1906 Augustus gave Denarnaud 400f ....Donné à Augustin DENARNAUD 400,00
19th April 1907 Augustus gave Denarnaud 400f .....................Donné à Augustin DENARNAUD 400,00
September 1909 Augustine gave Den 400f ........................... Donné à Augustin Dén. 400,00

so he paid someone called Augustin Denarnaud? is that what you are saying?
they are all from the spends/debits not credits....the right hand collumn.

edited to add....

i have just re checked and if i put Donné à Augustin DENARNAUD into Google i get Augustus gave Denarnaud but if i put the same thing into Bling i get Gave Augustin Denarnaud....frigin confusing

ok, trying to translate stuff as i go along is confusing for me, as you can see its not easy.
so ..... Augustus and Augustine Denarnaud get payments of 400f for years the same as Charles Denarnaud the blacksmith, Augustus and Augustines payments are more regular. Who are Augustus and Augustine Denarnaud? do they work with Charles the Blacksmith in a family buisness or are they not connected at all?

hitting the shops....back later :D

Obviously people got paid for work done and services rendered.... and Saunière was employing and feeding a lot of workers.

How can you go to the shops...it's night time!
.....trying to remember when i last went to a shop.

Like I said, it's silly season and the shops are open until 10pm  ....I am nearly done now though.

So who was this other Denarnaud (Augustine and or Augustus)?

Denarnaud was quite a common name, but they might have got the contract because they were related to Marie,s family, just speculating :D

Guillaumes position with the church would have made him responsible for hiring and firing according to that early job description you posted.

Dénarnaud Augustin : ....Blacksmith :D
Forgeron à Alet, il fut employé par l'abbé Saunière pour divers travaux.

Dénarnaud Barthélémy : ...married to Antoinette Fons

Fons Auguste : ....Husband of Julie Maleville
