Here are some photo's of the church of St Martin's in Limoux ( that IMHO should have cathedral status ).
ImageImage
One thing I think is of particular interest regarding RLC, is the draped curtain design ( except this time with a different symbol, not the "Crista" ).
I don't know the significance of the dragon motif below ( anyone ? ). Some interesting names below - Sauniere, Tisseyre and Riviére ( probably non-related though ). Another similar curtain design. Unfortunately as i mentioned elsewhere, a large part of the church was off access to visitors because of prior vandalism

Awesome pictures NIC
Great camera work

Dragon and the sword = Saint Michael
but winged serpents or dragons
are on the base of the Apprentice Pillar at Rossalyn Chapel

This one is a JHS ... Jesus cHristos Salvator.

The dragon and a cross-sword ... reference to St. George?

First pic: Obviously SC = St. Catherine.

Did you see that painting in St. Martin where a monk takes Jesus off the cross and where the eyes of Jesus are open?

Another very interesting church in Limoux - though not that old - is the one that was opened up in Billard's time.

An article by Christian Doumergue on that other church - l' Eglise de l'Assomption in Limoux -

http://www.christiandoumergue.com/Limoux.pdf

And that vandalism at St Martin's which occurred on July 24th this year -

Or Jesus Hominum Salvator - Jesus, Saviour of Men; or In Hoc Signo - By This Sign; with the alternating "step-and-repeat" pattern of the Crown of Thorns and Crucifixion nails, this is clearly Jesuit imagery.

Funny you should say that, because this church was a cathedral at one time - from 1317 to 1318. Pope John XXII had established a new episcopal see at Limoux in 1317, but caved to pressure (interestingly enough, from the Dominican monks of Prouille) and wound up having to move it to Notre Dame d'Alet the following year.

Thanks Egi and everyone else, no I haven't got a photo of that particular painting, but I really struggled with the light in there, also it may have been in the area that was restricted.
The first picture is of St Catherine as you say, with the Catherine wheel. I didn't visit the other church in Limoux, will put it on the list for my next trip. Here are a couple more pictures. The St Michel is interesting because the devil looks very similar to the Asmodeus in RLC, a St Louis for Lovuian, and a quite beautiful stained glass window ( apologies for the qualities but as I said before it was difficult in there, and I'm reducing the sizes by 200% to fit the forum )

Thank you Nic
very much

But that face on St Louis is really spooky

and the stained glass window Beautiful

similar motif as Rennes

Mary Magdalene ( Mary of Bethany)
Sun and Moon
they are connected Ying and Yang ...
his head isn't covered hers is
he is sitting and she is kneeling
One side of her face and the other side of his

Very pretty

Glad you like the Fleur de Lys Sheila, here are a few more pictures. These will be the last from St Martin's, as I'm sure some people will be getting bored.

Some of them are like these little paintings high up in the church of Brenac that you can barely make out without a zoom.
And they're also like these of NDdM.
Alchemistic patterns altogether.
Please post some more pics, Nic, if you can. TIA.

I'd explain what all the monograms mean, but I'm sure I'd be roundly ignored for citing the mundanity in such a sexy thread. They are handy, however, so thanks just the same.

Most of what you have to say is rightly ignored, it's never stopped you before, so go ahead,

Oh, well it shouldn't matter then, correct?

Feeling your oats, Jim? Smelling blood in the water? Tension is the only thing that tends to rouse you from long periods of hibernation.

As they all contain 'S' do they refer to Saints names ?

Doesn't really matter, no tension, just like to rattle your cage every now an then to see if you're still kickin. Back to sleep for now.

Then I wonder why so many people live in fear of a Vatican "takeover"...?
